International Experience Canada (IEC)

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a well-known work permit program that allows young adults from participating countries to gain meaningful international work experience while experiencing life in Canada. Falling under the Open Work Permit category, IEC promotes youth mobility and cultural exchange by allowing participants to live and work in Canada temporarily without requiring a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The IEC program is available to citizens of over 30 partner countries that have youth mobility agreements with Canada. Applicants must generally be between 18 and 35 years of age (age limits vary depending on the country of citizenship), possess a valid passport, and meet all country-specific eligibility requirements to apply.

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is divided into three distinct streams:

IEC candidates are chosen through a structured system of application pools and invitation rounds. After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), applicants must complete biometrics, pay the applicable processing fees, and submit all required supporting documents. Approved applicants are issued a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction, which must be presented to Canadian border officials upon arrival to obtain the work permit.

The IEC program provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable Canadian work experience, enhance language proficiency, and develop professional connections while experiencing Canada’s diverse and multicultural environment. Participation in IEC can also support future immigration goals, including eligibility for permanent residence pathways such as the Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry.

Whether your goal is to explore Canada, gain international work exposure, or strengthen your professional profile, the International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers a flexible and accessible pathway to working and living in Canada through Live Better Immigration.
