Agricultural Workers

Canada’s agricultural sector is a vital pillar of the country’s economy and food security, creating a steady demand for experienced foreign workers across farming and food production industries. To address ongoing labour shortages, Canada offers dedicated work permit options for agricultural professionals seeking temporary employment and potential long-term settlement opportunities.
The Agricultural Workers pathway, listed under the Special Groups category within the broader Work section, provides a focused avenue for individuals with relevant agricultural experience to legally work in Canada and, in certain cases, progress toward permanent residency.

This pathway primarily operates through the following two programs:

Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP)

SAWP enables citizens of participating countries—such as Mexico and selected Caribbean nations—to work with approved Canadian employers during peak planting and harvesting seasons. Eligible workers may be employed for up to eight months per year in designated agricultural occupations, helping employers meet seasonal labour demands efficiently.

Agricultural Stream under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

Open to foreign nationals from all countries, this stream supports both seasonal and year-round agricultural employment. It covers roles such as greenhouse and mushroom production, poultry and egg farming, livestock raising, and other essential farming operations, offering greater flexibility for employers and workers alike.

Eligible Occupations

Roles under this category generally fall within National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER 4 or 5. Common positions include:

Job Offer & LMIA Requirement

To qualify, foreign workers must secure a valid job offer from a Canadian employer authorized to hire through the relevant program. Employers are also required to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), confirming that no suitable Canadian citizens or permanent residents are available to fill the position.

Work Permit Details

Work permits issued under this stream are typically employer-specific and granted for a fixed duration. Employees may work only for the approved employer and position during the validity period of the permit.

Pathways to Permanent Residence

Although these roles are considered temporary, agricultural workers may later become eligible for permanent residence through programs such as the Agri-Food Pilot or various Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), depending on their work experience and eligibility.
